Constitution of Student Council of Thousand Islands High School

Preamble

The purpose of the student council is to promote cooperation, responsibility, friendship, equal privileges, and school spirit among the students. It should work to further student - faculty - administration relations.

Article I

Section I - Name

The name of this organizations shall be "the Student Council of Thousand islands High School."

Section II - Membership

The students in the Senior high school are eligible for membership in this organization.

Article II

Section I - Representation - All terms are one (1) year.

A: Officers - 4

B: Seniors - 3

C: Juniors - 3

D: Sophomores - 3

E: Freshmen - 3

Any student wishing to become an officer of the Student Body must file a petition of 60 signatures on or before, the day so designated, Students wishing to become a member of the Student Council must file a petition of 30 signatures from members of the class they are representing. Petitions will be posted for inspection by the student body for no less than 24 hours prior to the election process. Petitions must be contested during a specified time to be set by the Student Council Advisor.

Section II - Vacancies

If a vacancy occurs, the class is expected to elect a qualified representative. A vacancy among the officers will be filled by a member of the Student Council.

Section III - Election

Officers shall be elected by the entire Student Body on Election Day in the Spring. This shall be on or before May 25 and shall be preceded by the Campaign Week. All officer candidates are required to promote their qualifications, i.e. posters, slogans, etc. Every candidate will be responsible for delivering a campaign speech prior to election (date will be announced accordingly). If unable to meet these requirements, nominees will be asked to withdraw their candidacy. Class representatives shall be elected in the Spring, one (1) week after officer elections.

Section IV - Meetings

A: The Council shall reconvene during the week following election of new officers and class representatives.

B: There shall be a regular meeting of the Council at least once every four weeks. Time and place of the meeting shall be decided at the first regular meeting.

C: Regular attendance shall be required in the Council. If one has three (3) inexcusable absences, he/she will be dismissed and the position treated as a vacancy. The reason for the absence must be reported to the Student Council Advisor prior to the absence if possible or the day following the absence if it is an unexpected absence. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.

Article III

Section I - Election of Officers

A: Each year the president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer shall be elected by the student body. The president shall be a Senior and the vice-president a Junior.

B: One faculty member advisor will be appointed by the principal.

C: Class representatives shall be elected by each individual class.

D: In the event of a tie between candidates nominated for the position of class representative, both candidates shall be elected.

E: Elections for student council officers shall be held in the spring. Election of class representatives shall be approximately one or two weeks after elections of officers. If time does not allow this, voting will be done in the fall.

Section II - Duties of Officers, Council Members and the Student Body

A: It is expected that the President will conduct his/her personal actions to reflect the dignity of the office. He/She shall preside over all meetings and call special sessions.

B: The Vice-President shall reside over the meeting when the President is absent. You are the coordinator of Winter Carnival Week.

C: The Secretary must keep an accurate record of all happenings at regular and special meetings, (attendance, dates, old and new business) and answer all communications as directed by the President. You will provide a typed agenda for every meeting with old and new business ideas. You are to read the minutes at the beginning of each meeting. If unable to attend a meeting, someone will be appointed to keep an accurate for you.

D: The Treasurer must keep an accurate record of all money transactions by the Student Council whether they are in the form of deposits or withdrawals. You are to make the transactions as soon as possible. You will read your treasurer's report at every meeting.

E: The Historian is to head a committee which will maintain a School Scrap Book, including school articles and pictures.

F: It shall be the duty of every student of the Thousand Islands High School to perform the utmost of his/her ability, any task that he/she may be called upon to do by the Student Council.

Section III - Duties of the Student Council

A: Maintenance and operation of a school store

B: Maintenance of a school scrap book

C: Choice of school assembly programs

2...Winter Carnival Week

3...Moving-Up Day

D: Helping new students

E: Promotion of federation

F: Provision of guides at school functions

G: Promotion of other activities which the school welfare may demand

H: Promote student - faculty cooperation

Section IV - Additional Powers

The council shall have the power to adopt any course of action necessary to cope with unforeseen circumstances in carrying out preceding provisions.
