The Thousand Islands Central School
District is located in Northern New York on the mighty St. Lawrence River, between the
Lighthouse at Lake Ontario, and the Thousand Islands Bridge at Collins Landing, which
spans the mainland and Wellesley Island.
We have Approximately 7,000 year round
residents in the area, which includes The villages of Cape Vincent, Clayton; the hamlets
for Depauville, Fishers Landing, Rosier, and the connecting countryside. Our summer
population increases man fold, as friends come from all over New York, the northeast and
Canada to live in this beautiful area.
Thousand Islands Central School was
established in 1967 as a result of a merger of the schools in Cape Vincent and Clayton.
Our district has a student population of approximately 1250. We have two elementary
schools; grades K-5, a middle school; grades 6-8, and a senior high school; grades 9-12.
The instructional programs of the
district are designed to meet the varying needs of its active student population.
Excellence and equity direct the efforts of the K-12 professional staff. There is a strong
academic emphasis at all levels supported by a full range of specialized services
including speech and language development, special education and remedial programs,
counseling and psychological services, plus a school physician and registered nurses that
serve each building.
The special interests and talents of
our students are met through a full curriculum of instrumental and choral offerings, art
classes, computer technology courses, and an array of occupational education classes
available through the local Jefferson Vocational technical Center. Advanced Placement,
Accelerated, and Regents Courses offer challenging opportunities to our college bound
students. Most classes are grouped in a heterogeneous setting, with an emphasis on a
belief that " all students can learn well". Over 50% of the Thousand Islands
graduates pursue post-secondary educational opportunities, many receiving Regents
Diplomas, Scholarships, and National Merit recognition.
For the academically talented, who
seek greater intellectual challenge, the District offers the Enriched Learning for Success
Program for the elementary grades, and the Regional High School of Excellence Program
through BOCES, for secondary students.
Physical education and interscholastic
sports activities are supported by dedicated teachers and coaches, backed by a strong
community and good facilities.
The District's education and
interscholastic sports activities are leaders in the Effective Schools initiative.
Extensive training and In-Service support have helped to make the staff effective in this
program. Other School Improvement Strategies include: Effective Teaching, TESA, Whole
Language and Excellence and Accountability, for which have been designated a
"Pacesetter" model.
What We Believe...
Education is the
most important responsibility we have as a community.
The world is a much
more competitive workplace today, and in order for our students to have productive and
successful futures, they need to be better educated than previous generations.
Education is a
partnership among members of the total community, including students, teachers, parents,
and all others. Our school can succeed only when all partners work together as a
supportive team.
Quality shall be the
foundation for the work of all students, teachers, and support staff. In order for the
Thousand Islands District to be successful, high standards of performance and a positive,
supportive atmosphere for everyone is required.
Children learn in a
variety of ways, and at different rates. Learning is both individual and a social success.
Thousand Islands Schools shall respond without bias to all educational needs of each
student.
Thousand Islands
Schools shall provide the best possible learning opportunities that:
-assist students to
see relationships and connections,
-provide authentic,
real, and meaningful experiences,
- are gained from an
integrated curriculum
-come from both the
student and the school.
