AMERICAN LEGION GIVES $11,000 FOR MARCHING BAND UNIFORMS

The American Legion Colon Couch Post 821 in Clayton recently donated $11,000 to help purchase new uniforms for the entire band, including the color guard, dancers, and flags. This generous gift is a major boost towards the band’s goal of $33,000. Other community services organizations, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to take part in this project. Future fundraising plans may include a benefit concert along with mailings and presentations to community organizations. An informational meeting, including a performance by marching band members, is currently being organized. Anyone wishing to make a donation or seeking more information about the project should contact Mrs. Tammy Quencer, Marching Band Director @ 686-5594.

T.I.’s FIRST SWIM TEAM

This was the first year for a swim team at Thousand Islands. The modified girls team, coached by Marcy Alberry, had a remarkable season winning a total of eight meets against schools who had been competing for several years. In their first season of play, the girls broke several competitors’ school records. Elisabeth Grater swam the 100 Freestyle in 1:04 taking first place and beating a personal best time. Ashley Knapp took two 1st place finishes in both the 50 Butterfly and the Individual Medley with times of 35.5 seconds and 1:19.90 respectively at the North-South Tournament at Adirondack Central School on Saturday October 16, 1999. The relay team of Megan Nuffer, Maureen Hummel, Ashley Knapp, and Elizabeth Grater swimming 50 yards of the back, breast, fly, and free took second place with a time of 2:21. Special thanks to the T.I. Booster Club for contributing to the team warm-up suits.

FIRST YEAR FOR FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN

Parents, students, and teachers are pleased with the full day Kindergarten program which began in September. The extended time and smaller class size allows for greater student and teacher interaction and has created a very positive beginning school experience.

STUDENTS BUILD SET AT CHANNEL 66

Thousand Islands Community School students have constructed the news anchor podium for Watertown’s newest low power TV station, Channel 66, owned by Anthony DiMarco. Students Josh Wheeler, Tom Goodman, and Ezra Stevens, under the direction of teacher Wayne Gutenmann, formulated, designed, and built from scratch the news anchor desk. "Projects such as these give students a great sense of confidence in the accomplishment of meaningful real-life work experience", said Community School Director Penny Eggler. As a result of this project, seven community school students are assigned to school-to-work internships at Channel 66. These students will learn how to operate the studio equipment. This includes editing, producing advertisements, and learning the every day operations of running a TV station.

HEALTH & WELLNESS COMMITTEE

The goal of the Health & Wellness Committee is to establish a climate that promotes positive health messages and behavior for our students and community. The committee consists of district employees, parents, and community members. The School Health & Wellness program includes: school environment, health instruction, health services, physical education, school guidance and counseling, food services, school site health promotion for faculty and staff, and integrated school and community programs.

The committee has initiated the K-6 Health Curriculum called Great Body Shop this past September. A full time 8th grade Health position was recommended by the committee last spring and a teacher was hired this past September. Sub-committees are investigating Drug & Alcohol issues as well as the Food Service program.

The committee is looking forward to a busy and productive year. Parents and community members are encouraged to be alert to the on-going drug and alcohol influence on our youth. If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, call School Nurse Susan Kellogg, chairperson of the Health & Wellness Committee, at 654-2366.

Informational Technology At T.I.

The Thousand Islands School District is dedicated to preparing our students to be successful in our ever-changing society. It is therefore important that students understand and incorporate present and future technologies into their lives. It is from this rationale that we assert the importance of technology in education, not only as a separate curriculum, but also as a driving force for change in the educational environment. Technology education and New York State Learning Standards demand all students apply their interdisciplinary knowledge in real world contexts and learn about technological tools and processes such as: basic computer applications, telecommunications, data collection devices, multimedia applications, research tools, and controlling systems. Through this program all students will continually develop technological proficiencies as an important foundation for their success.

Continuing advances in technology are bringing changes that have an increasing impact on the way we obtain, process, present, evaluate, and use information. Therefore, the District is committed to:

A comprehensive staff development program to ensure appropriate and effective use of technology.

The integration of technology within and across all curriculum areas.

The preparation of students to utilize multiple forms of technology.

The equitable distribution and access to technological equipment and materials for all students.

The promotion of technology as an alternative to traditional methods of gathering, organizing, and synthesizing information for instruction, management and evaluation.

The provision of sufficient funds, within the budgetary constraints of the District, for the implementation of technology in instruction.
